How long does therapy take?

As a solution-focused, goal-oriented therapist, Samantha Hernandez aims to help you see progress in 3-6 months. Some clients choose to stay up to 1 year. This all depends on your attendance, frequency and length of sessions, and what pace is best for you.

What can I expect? What is the therapy process?

  • After a consultation call, if you decide to continue, your therapist will collect your basic information (name, phone number, email, DOB, physical address) and will first verify your insurance plan so you know if your mental health services are covered and if you have any payment responsibility (copays, deductible payments). Self-pay does not require insurance verification.
  • Once your insurance plan is verified or self-pay is chosen, your information will be added to an online Client Portal. You will receive an invitation via email to this portal where you can sign documents online, provide additional information, make payments, and access your appointment information.
  • You will attend your sessions via online secure video. Your first session will involve review of paperwork, getting to know you/your history, and setting your goals for therapy. The rest of your sessions will work towards making your goals a reality.
  • Discharge from services at any time. The goal is to discharge when treatment goals are complete. How long this takes depends on your unique needs.

Is Therapy Confidential?

As a general rule, all therapy sessions are confidential and anything you discuss with your therapist will remain between the two of you, unless you request otherwise. This is as per protection rules by law, which all therapists legally need to follow, and no information from the session can be disclosed without prior written consent from the client.

There are exceptions to this law however, and the therapist can disclose information from the session to legal authorities or appointed persons if any of the following are true:

  • The therapist suspects abuse to a child, dependent adult, or an elder, or are made aware of domestic abuse. These situations all require the therapist to notify law authorities immediately.
  • If the therapist suspects an individual has caused, or is threatening to cause severe bodily harm to another person, therapists are required to report it to the police.
  • If an individual intends to harm himself or herself, expressing to the therapist for example, plans for suicide. While the therapist will attempt to work through this in the therapy session, if it appears to be unresolved or the client does not cooperate, additional action may need to be taken to ensure the safety of the client.
